I'm working from home at the moment, taking a sabbatical from my studio as our new baby is due in September. So I'm back to doing some portraiture again, and loving it!
I can't wait to be able to sketch our new arrival. In the meantime I'm going to be working (gently!) on a few small oil paintings that I've been waiting to get on with for a while.

I've just seen a little mention I have in this months Ideal Home magazine, with a couple of past portrait works featured (better images on my contact page.) I hope to do some similar works in the next few months and try a new angle on the style that I've been planning for a while. Watch this space..... images to follow.... gradually (baby permitting)!

Making the most of the library dust I've collected from the floor of a University library. These two new works are arranged more deliberately than my earlier 'Library Dust' pieces. I feel they are more successful, drawing attention to the interesting shapes, textures, colours and details amidst the fragments.

This weekend I've taken the opportunity to develop some ideas I've been working on with my withdrawn library books at the Spike Island Open Studios. I'll be there on Monday if you fancy coming along.

Inside Out

I've just been installing my books 'Withdrawn' for this show at the RWA in Bristol. The work is all looking really good together, which is quite an achievement for such an eclectic show! Well done the Jamaica Street team and thanks for inviting me to be involved. (For details follow linked logo.)

The exhibition is billed as "an insight into Bristol's explosive studio movement the show highlights JSA's prominent position in the city's art scene. Encompassing the vibrancy and diversity of the studio, the exhibition showcases a number of emerging and established artists, and ex-studio members, who have gone on to achieve international success."

Discarded books.....

There is something about books being open on the floor that is really unnerving. I guess most of us have to subdue the echos of the teachers remonstrations, 'pick up that book!'

This installation seems to be much more powerful than the others (below) of this work, Withdrawn. I am currently exploring the possibilities of putting this piece into a show at the RWA with Jamaica Street Artists. More details to follow soon.

This book is the culmination of my Unsaid Words project which has spanned two years, at least. You can find out more about the project and the poetry books which are now published and on sale at Trigger Editions.

Exhibiting at Howard Gardens

This installation at Howard Gardens gallery in Cardiff has just come down. It was great to have the chance to put this piece, called 'Withdrawn', up in the cabinet there but is has made me question again what is the best way to view this work. How does the glass interfere? Does it add anything? I'm thinking at the moment about installing the work for a show in January with Jamaica Street Artists. I would like to do something really different to this and investigate how differently people interact with it. I would be interested to see the books look strew text down on the floor....

Howard Gardens, Cardif

This recent work, Withdrawn, will be exhibited at Howard Gardens Gallery in Cardiff from the September 20th - October 8th. The work is a collection of withdrawn university library books, saved from being discarded and embossed with a curious collection of statements, culled from the text of each volume. Each statement seems in retrospect almost prophetic of the devaluation of the information and wisdom contained in these well thumbed, yellowing library books.

Price less, Worth less bookmarks

I've just sent off 100 'Price less' book marks for a project called 'Bookmarks VIII - Escaping the Library System' run by UWE. The bookmarks, made from withdrawn library books and fragments of broken books found on the floor of Bristol University libraries, will be given away at select locations around the world.

A second limited edition set of bookmarks has also been produced embossed with the words 'Worth less'. These are available to purchase from Trigger Editions.

Open Studio Weekend

I am going to be leading a couple of workshops at this event.

‘Binding Sketchbooks’ £4 SARAH TRIGG

Learn to make your own hardback sketchbooks and notebooks using traditional bookbinding techniques. You will be able to make blank books for sketching afterwards, or bind in some of your drawings from previous workshops.

All ages welcome but each child must be accompanied by an adult. 2 hours long. All equipment and materials provided

‘Drawing the Line’ £3 SARAH TRIGG

For those who love to find new ways of looking. An intensive drawing workshop exploring the possibilities of line, from it's most minimal forms, to elaborate intricacies and 3D drawing with wire!

Age 10+ Suitable for all levels of ability. All equipment and materials provided.

This is an oil portrait I've just completed, my first on found fabric. I'd love to do some more like this. I need to find people who have kept old, sentimental pieces of fabric, childhood clothes, curtains, sheets etc. that I could paint on to.

Library Dust

My first set of Library Dust books has come back for the bookbinders emboss with beautiful gold text on the front covers. They look fantastic, this picture really doesn't do them justice.

The text excerpts (which read 'Nothing has been less historical or less true', 'the produce of the civilised world', We are living in another world', 'the significance of this', and 'we were told long ago') come from somewhere inside each book, and can be found if you search hard enough inside the framed page under all the library dust.

The Golden Word

This work, a new version of my 'but a breath' drawing installations, was on display at Salaam Shalom Radio Station for the Easton Arts Trail. It's a station run by Jews and Muslims and the exhibition was inspired by Abrahamic Calligraphy - the written word of God given through Abraham and Moses, which Christians, Jews and Muslims all revere. If you missed it there may be a chance to see the show again as we're looking into touring the work at different venues around Bristol. Watch this space for more news.

Spike Island Open

This weekend my Studio is open to the public

Friday 1st May - 6pm - 9pm

Saturday 2nd - Monday 4th May - 10.30am - 6pm

Spike Island is on Cumberland Road behind the SS Great Britain. It's usually possible to park on the road then just follow everyone else!

It's always a great event as there is masses to see, something for every taste (literally!). My studio is number 77 so come and find me first and I'll point you in the direction of work that you'll like. There will be different events going on and there's a lovely bar/cafe, so plenty to fill up most of your day if you want to. www.spikeisland.org.uk

Kates Bible

Well it's finally finished. Kate gave me two well loved Bibles which were extremely well thumbed. They were both full of precious notes and underlining which she wanted to keep but lots of tears and creases too that needed repair. Thankfully they were exactly the same editions and there were just enough salvageable pages to make one complete Bible.

So here it is.

Momentum Bookbinding Workshops

These amazing books were made at some bookbinding workshops I did in August for Momentum festival.We had a great variety of materials which were used very creatively. One person made a book cover with cork (pictured) which worked really well. And... oh so many of us fell in love with the old school charms of Letraset!
There will be another opportunity to make similar books at my next 'Workshop in the Living room' on 20th September. (see previous post) Let me know if you'd like to book a place. Hope you can make it.

More Workshop Dates

For those of you who couldn't make our first couple of workshops we've added some extra dates:

16th August - Drawing

We'll start by learning some basic techniques and for the more adventurous experiment with 3D drawing with wire!

20th September - Bookbinding

We'll be focusing on repairing and re-covering books but there will also be an opportunity to make a small notebook from scratch. If you have something that needs mending or re-covering do bring it with you. Materials will be provided and no previous experience or knowledge is necessary.

18th October - Sewing without a Pattern

Bring with you anything you'd like to mend or re-vamp. But if you don't have any ideas this session we'll also be making and recovering cushions. Some materials provided.

These workshops are free for friends and friends of friends! Just bring along some lunch to share. Places are limited so do book soon by emailing Sarah.

Bookbinding workshop

The first in a series of Summer Art Worshops, this Saturday - Bookbinding.

There will be opportunities to learn how to rebind a book that is falling apart or make a photo album from scratch. Most materials will be provided free. Tuition is provided so come whatever you feel your level of skill is.
We will meet at the Triggs (see the directory or email me) at 11am and finish between 4-5pm.
Just bring some nibbles to share for lunch.

Contributing to the Fall'en Project

The Fall'en project has developed over the years. I have displayed it in several different guises (see Gallery section of the website ). I would like to experiment more with displaying the squashed paperclips alongside people's stories, as in the picture above.
