Shire Inspire
I love an open studio event or an arts trail but sadly in the village where I live and work, Shirehampton, on the outskirts of Bristol, there are none. I've long hoped to find a venue to exhibit the work of local artists, like a pop-up Open Studio. After exploring possibilities with artist Annelise Egli, who has a similar passion to engage our local community in the arts, finally, we have a solution, 'Shire Inspire'. We will be running a bi-monthly exhibition showcasing the work of a wide variety of artists and creatives, from the window of Shirehampton Post Office.
During November and December, a series of my watercolours are on display in the window between are based on local scenes and form part of a body of work made whilst I was working from home, looking after my young family. These paintings are quite a departure from my previous art practice where, based first at Jamaica Street Studios and then at Spike Island Studios, I made large scale drawings, oil paintings and installations using found, altered objects, During maternity leave I've taken the opportunity to scale-down my pieces, engage with the landscape and experiment with watercolour.
In this current body of work there is a preoccupation with painting light, mist and high contrast scenes that evoke a feeling of being immersed in the vastness and drama of the local landscape.
